What many people will think when they see the front of the car is that they are dealing with a Porsche 996 Turbo. That is of course not so strange, because the front bumper is identical to that of the Turbo. However, there is something that the Porsche 996 “40 Jahre” can be recognized by immediately. The color, called GT Silver. An exclusive and very unique color that could only be ordered on the Porsche Carrera GT, Porsche’s flagship. With the Porsche 996 40 Jahre, however, there was no choice, they all got this exclusive Porsche color.
The 40 Jahre edition is wonderfully subtle in its details, no fuss and no exaggerated gold letters. On the back of the car, the 911 logo is in grey with a small indication ’40 Jahre’ underneath. We find this reference again, this time in the interior behind the gear lever, now not only with the words ’40 Jahre’ but also ‘Limited Edition’ and the number of the series. In this case number 0373.
When Porsche comes up with a limited edition, you know you are getting something special, you can order it blindly without being disappointed. The best materials are pulled out of the closet and packaged into something that is right down to the last detail. A limited slip differential, lightweight wheels and the cream of the crop: the x51 engine package with 345 hp. This package was developed by the racing department of Porsche in Weissach, which at the time built the famous Mezger engine for the GT3. The x51 package was therefore a back-up plan for when the 996 GT3 engine would not be homologated. The 40 Jahre edition is a versatile car, a great touring car, but as soon as the revs exceed 4,000 rpm it shows that it is a real sports car.
The standard specification of the 40 Jahre edition was nicely complete. The car was equipped with: automatic air conditioning, cruise control, electric sliding/tilting roof, parking sensors, Porsche Stability Management and leather upholstery. Only a few extra options could be chosen, including electrically adjustable and heated seats with memory, PCM with satellite navigation, CD changer and a Bose sound system. Quite nice, because nowadays there is a choice of 300 different options. One of the best options of this 996? The sports exhaust system! This makes the 40 Jahre edition the best sounding Porsche 996 there is.
The Porsche 996 40 Jahre Jübilaumsmodell stands for comfort combined with sportiness. The best description of the feeling of this 996? Once you’re in, you don’t want to get out. Pure enjoyment!
